Comment: As the end of the scrappage scheme draws near, what comes next?

With the goverment’s scrappage scheme due to finish by the end of March (or as is even more likely - sometime slightly before, if the maximum number of orders is reached), it it inevitable that pretty soon the car industry will have to revert back to the much higher pre-scrappage prices that were being charged prior to the scheme.

Though one or two companies (such as Toyota and Vauxhall) will continue to offer some sort of scrappage offer of their own afterwards, the majority of the 37 participating manufacturers will be reverting to their standard pricing - which begs the question, just what kind of sales figures can be expected for the spring quarter, and then into the summer, as consumers are suddenly faced with far higher (and more prohibitive) prices?

Certain companies in particular have enjoyed massive success with the scheme - Ford and Hyandai being the two frontrunners, and indeed on the whole it has been massively successful as a way of keeping people buying new cars, safeguarding at least some manufacturing jobs and marginally reducing CO2 emissions by encouraging the use of smaller (and more efficient) cars.

However, there was always the risk that the scheme would create a slightly problematic period of market transition once it ended (which nonetheless was preferable for everyone when compared with immediate and much more drastic consequences to the market faced with crumbling demand a year ago) - and it will be interesting to see how manufacturers, and consumers, react to these changes.

I expect the used car market will once more see a surge in demand (after the slight drop off seen as a result of the scrappage offer), but beyond that it remains a tough call to judge what the manufacturers are likely to do, especially if demand for new cars curtails significantly over coming months. As always, we’ll keep you posted.

First photos of the BMW E89 Z4 GT3

Just two months ago, BMW Motorsport softly announced a new model due out in the second quarter of 2010: BMW Z4 GT3. Based on the current generation E89, the Z4 GT3 is powered by the 4.0 liter V8 engine found in the current M3 producing approximately 480 bhp. The engine is controlled by the modern ECU 408, while the Power400 control unit is responsible for operating all actuators. The transmission takes place via a sequential, six-speed gearbox.

The BMW Z4 GT3 has an estimated price of 298,000 euros ($427,000 at the current rate exchange).

First look: 2011 BMW 5 Series

Last week, courtesy of BMW North America, yours truly had a chance to spend some much needed time with the all new 2011 BMW 5 Series. The new sporty sedan made its debut last month during the international media launch held in Lisbon, Portugal.

The first 5 Series models will arrive at U.S. dealerships in June and for now, BMW customers will have the option to choose between the 535i 3.0 liter Twin-Scroll powered model or the high-end unit, 550i, powered by the 4.4 liter Twin-Turbo engine seen in the GT models or the new 7 Series.

The 2011 535i model we’ve seen last week was actually a demo unit used by BMW to train their staff, from client advisors to mechanics. The exterior of the car wasn’t in top shape, so we decided this time to skip the much craved photos, but we promise we’ll make it up to you in the near future.

Mercedes Benz E-Class Review

When the new Mercedes Benz E-Class arrived in showrooms in mid June of last year (2009), it was regarded in some circles as Mercedes Benz returning to its roots.

Well not quite back to the very beginning but the new car certainly has a hint of nostalgia for things past. This is especially noticeable on the dashboard where the almost regimented lines could look old fashioned, if it wasn’t for the modern switchgear and crisp digital graphics.

But where are its roots? Well, the new Mercedes Benz E-Class has been inspired by the Ponton. This was a car built in 1953 and one that lays claim to being the first car to be ‘spy photographed’, while it was being tested a year earlier.

Video: Porsche’s Glorious Motorsport Past

Porsche plays the heritage card with a pair of dribble-inducing TV ads

Porsche’s latest US TV ad for its new Panamera is quite a sight, featuring 50 models from its undoubtedly glorious past. The idea is to prove to doubters that the new super-saloon is indeed a thoroughbred Porsche - and you’ve got to say that the result is effective.

Testimonial: Andy Sleet 26/01/10.

Peter,

Just felt that I would like to comment on the experiences that I’ve had over the past year with your company.  Firstly, I have to say that it’s really refreshing to meet someone in business that I feel is honest, genuine and fair.

Over the past 25 years or so of owning a car I have used many garages for MOT’s and repairs; in all this time, I have never been fully happy with the experience of dealing with them.   Finally I have found in you, a business where the standard of work is exemplary and that I feel comfortable dealing with.  Every time I have brought my car in, the front office team have truly taken time to listen to me and understand what I am looking for.  They have always spent time with me explaining what they feel is the best solution and have delivered on their promise on time and within the estimate.

A huge thank you to you and the team there at PMW.

I have no hesitation in recommending any one to use your services.

Kind Regards

Andy Sleet

Testimonial: Steve Winter 27/12/09

Dear Sir,

I have now fitted the replacement swirl flap blanks that I purchased from you on the 3rd December,  I found the job very easy and a pleasure (if working on your own can be called that!)  The parts fitted perfectly and the engine runs great,  I also changed the engine breather as you suggested along with the air filter.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the blanking plates and your service; in fact one of my friends also has a 730d so I suspect you will get a call from him soon?  It is a shame I live a bit too far from you to come for regular maintenance.

As agreed I have enclosed the six small blanking plates that I did not require for credit against my account.

Sincerely yours,

Steve Winter
