7 Series state of the art

Introduced in 2002, the fourth-generation BMW 7 Series was a technological marvel with wonderful performance.

However, while the super-luxury sedan was a winner on the road, its controversial styling never grew on North Americans. As a result, the 7 Series lost some of its lustre in the face of strong competitors like the Audi A8, Lexus LS and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Seven years later, it’s time for a new 7 Series, and this one’s a lot easier on the eyes.

You could say that the redesigned 7 Series represents an evolution from the previous styling, but it might be more accurate to say that it’s a revolution. The 2010 7 Series maintains the curves of its predecessor, but steps back from the odd and unsettling proportions to take on a shape and profile more in line with past 7 Series designs. Just like that, controversy has been traded for conservatism, and consumers who found last year’s model hard to look at won’t have nearly as much to complain about now — if anything at all.

BMW 7 Series Review

Towards the end of 2008, the fifth generation BMW 7 Series went on sale. It was an event that saw the introduction of a host of innovative features and functions and a lengthy list of updates to the luxury saloon’s already mind-boggling array of technology.

Nobody manages to combine cutting-edge technology and comfort in a luxury saloon in quite the same the way as the Germans seem to be able. Consider the options; the Mercedes Benz S Class or the Audi A8. Both are loaded with goodies and house large but efficient engines under elongated bonnets, but with the new 7 Series, BMW have gone that little bit further.

Clearly, a large car, the BMW 7 Series boasts the longest wheelbase in the luxury performance segment, and that is just the ‘regular’ version - the long wheelbase model adds 140mm to the wheelbase for even more legroom in the rear of the cabin.

The New BMW 760i and 760Li

The new BMW 7 Series already sets the benchmark in luxury performance motoring - and now BMW is moving up the standard of maximum exclusivity and supremacy in this supreme class to an even higher level, following a completely new definition. The new BMW 760i and the new BMW 760Li are taking over the top position within BMW’s model portfolio, representing the highest level of motoring refinement in their segment.

The heart and foundation of this exceptional new standard comes from the twelve-cylinder power unit featured in both top models in the BMW 7 Series. Developed as a completely new engine from the ground up, the V12 is a master-piece of modern engine technology. Superior power of 400 kW/544 hp comes at an engine speed of 5,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 750 Newton-metres (553 lb-ft) from just 1,500 rpm.

Refreshing or Revolting: 2009 BMW 7 Series

The fifth-generation BMW 7 Series — with less controversial styling — has arrived. At the heart of the 750i and long-wheelbase 750Li is a twin-turbo, direct-injection 4.4L V-8 BMW says will have class-leading fuel economy. The luxury sedan comes with a number of upgrades, but perhaps more important in a flagship vehicle, the 7 Series sports streamlined styling.
