Comparison: New Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. New BMW 5 Series

The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here: a real life comparison between the recently unveiled 2011 BMW 5 Series and the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class design. While we have been down this road just a few days ago with a photo comparison between the 5 Series and its competitors, this is time, the German magazine Autobild managed to get their hands on the new 5 and place it against the E-Class, and by place it, we mean, literally next to it.

The head-to-head photoshoot and comparison of the two models included the BMW 530d and Mercedes E350 CDI, two diesel engines very popular in Europe. The eternal confrontation, as Autobild has named it, creates and will create lots of controversy and disputes among BMW fans and plenty of comparison articles will flow from now on.

The new 5 Series not only put some more weight on, but it has also grown in size. It measures 4,899 mm in length, 1,86 mm in width and has a height of 1,464 mm. 28 centimeters more than the original 5 Series of 1972. Mercedes-Benz E-Class has the following dimensions: 4,868 mm in lengths, 1,854 mm width and 1,471 mm height. Pretty close dimensions, isn’t it?

Mercedes Benz E-Class Review

When the new Mercedes Benz E-Class arrived in showrooms in mid June of last year (2009), it was regarded in some circles as Mercedes Benz returning to its roots.

Well not quite back to the very beginning but the new car certainly has a hint of nostalgia for things past. This is especially noticeable on the dashboard where the almost regimented lines could look old fashioned, if it wasn’t for the modern switchgear and crisp digital graphics.

But where are its roots? Well, the new Mercedes Benz E-Class has been inspired by the Ponton. This was a car built in 1953 and one that lays claim to being the first car to be ‘spy photographed’, while it was being tested a year earlier.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe name returns

It’s a Mercedes-Benz tradition to use letter and number combinations for car names. But somewhere along the line there came to be too many models starting with the letter “C.”

So, the Mercedes CLK coupe disappears for 2010 and is now the refined and comfortable E-Class Coupe, with new styling and features that tie it to the long-popular Mercedes E-Class sedans. Evidently, there’s no problem with expanding the number of cars using the letter “E.”

With the same V-6 and V-8 engines that are in the E-Class sedans, the E-Class coupes are pretty looking models with a roomier back seat - sculpted for just two people - and more trunk space than you’d expect.

New E-Class Cabriolet is model for all seasons

A highly appealing and emotionally charged Cabriolet is the latest addition to the successful Mercedes-Benz E-Class line-up. The open-top two-door model, which goes on sale in the first quarter of 2010, features a classic fabric soft top, making for a stylistically pure cabriolet feeling.

“With the new Cabriolet we are complementing our successful E-Class family with yet another particularly emotionally appealing model,” says Frank Bernthaler, Director, Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Middle East & Levant.

The soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds - even when driving at speeds of up to 40 km/h. The cabriolet roof is stowed in a special compartment behind the rear panel. A retractable cover separates the soft top compartment from the boot area which must be closed in order to close the soft top. If the roof is to remain closed, the cover can be slid rearwards, in which case the boot capacity is increased by 90 litres to 390 litres. A through-loading feature is included as standard for the new Cabriolet, as is EASY-ENTRY - a manually operated entry and exit aid for the rear passengers.
