PMW’s handy solution to problem of diesel swirl flaps is featured in Total BMW mag

PMW’s very own DIY solution to a problem faced by owners of 2001-2005 diesel BMWs has recently been featured in Total BMW magazine in the May issue. PMW founder, Peter Mould, came up with the solution to what was a common problem for many BMW drivers, and continues to be a godsend for owners of cars manufactured during this period (BMW has since rectified the issue on newer models).

The problem is with the inlet manifolds on BMW’s common rail diesel engines from this period - and often resulted in broken parts causing a total engine failure in just out-of-warranty cars. While BMW will often listen to such instances with an understanding ear - and maybe even offer some sort of help - it seemed to make sense to try and avoid the problem entirely if possible. Hence Peter Mould’s handy (and cheap) solution: basically to remove the flaps, and replace them with billet aluminium blanking plugs designed by PMW.

The only negative consequences of such a move is to slightly increase the fuel consumption of the car while it is idling - with the trade-off being total insurance against the types of engine failure experienced by some BMW drivers.

The custom made kit for carrying out this modification is available for £14+VAT from PMW, and easy instructions can be found in this pdf file. Alternatively if you would like a specialist to carry out the quick procedure - or indeed if you are unsure about whether your car is at risk from such a failure, don’t hesitate to contact us on the numbers listed above.
